Check the Roof Ridge for Signs of Moisture Damage
The roof ridge, or ridge of a roof is the horizontal line running the length of the roof where the two roof planes meet. This intersection creates the highest point on a roof, sometimes referred to as the peak. Ridges are weak points because shingles can’t provide complete coverage over the area. Ridges are protected by flashing strips or ridge tiles, but those components are prone to sealant deterioration over time. During a routine roof inspection, experts often check the ridges before anything else.
Roof Valleys are Subject to More Rainwater Than Any Other Part of the Roof
The opposite of roof ridges, roof valleys are where the side or bottom edges of two slopes meet. Because the roof valleys are angled upwards, water is naturally funneled towards them, making them extremely vulnerable to moisture damage. Any sign of damage anywhere along a roof valley should be your cue to call for a professional inspection. This is especially common in older roofs.
Keep Roof Eaves Clean, and Check them Regularly
The eaves are the part of the roofing system that extends beyond the roof’s structure, past the house. Unlike the rest of the roofing system, they can’t hold as much weight because there’s nothing under it. This can be a major issue, especially when debris accumulates by the edges of the roof. Keeping the eaves clean is a high priority during routine roof maintenance.
Check for Damaged Roof Soffits
The soffit serves as an external ceiling, protecting the supports underneath the eaves and provides ventilation. Unlike indoor ceilings, the soffit is subjected to much more wear and tear caused by the harsh elements. Make sure your roofing contractor prioritizes checking the soffit for cracks, malformations and signs of water penetration.
